Shakira gave an emotional tribute to Mexico with a mix of mariachi and regional Mexican music, performing “Ciega sordomuda” and “El jefe”, songs inspired by the country where the Colombian superstar launched her music career 30 years ago. These songs were heard for the first time on Wednesday (March 19) during her current world tour, Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran.
With the surprise addition of a Mexican section in her repertoire, the artist offered the first of seven scheduled concerts at the GNP Seguros Stadium in Mexico City, in front of 65,000 people, according to figures from the promoter Ocesa.
In particular, it was “Ciega sordomuda”, one of her first international hits written over 20 years ago, that sparked the excitement among the audience. Accompanied by the mariachi band Gama 1000, Shakira delighted her fans with her famous version featuring Mexican trumpets and brass arrangements, included in her 2000 MTV Unplugged album. Meanwhile, with “El Jefe”, her collaboration with the Mexican-American group Fuerza Regida, included in her 2024 album that gives its name to the tour, she completed the Mexican touch during her return to the Latin American country after seven years of absence.
“This is the first of seven nights in this city that has given me so much joy. Together we are breaking a historic record and that is thanks to all the love you give me,” said the visibly emotional singer-songwriter.
Her seven concerts at the GNP Seguros Stadium (March 19, 21, 23, 25, 27, 28, and 30) make her the first artist to sell out the iconic venue seven times (previously known as Foro Sol) and gather almost half a million attendees, according to Ocesa.
The 48-year-old artist opened her dazzling show with “La fuerte”, produced by Argentine DJ Bizarrap, followed by hits like “Girl Like Me”, “Las de la Intuición”, “Estoy aquí”, “Inevitable”, “Te felicito”, “TQG”, “Monotonía”, “Shakira: Bzrp Music Sessions, Vol. 53” and “Don’t Bother”, where she showed a much more rock side. The rest of the repertoire was almost the same as the one Shakira has presented throughout the Latin American leg of her Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran tour, which began in Rio de Janeiro on February 11.
Prior to her unprecedented residency in Mexico City, Shakira achieved other feats in the country, such as two sold-out shows at the BBVA Stadium in the border city of Monterrey, and being the first artist to sell out the Azteca Stadium in Mexico City in 2011.
The Colombian artist has always had a special connection with Mexico, where she has a large and loyal fan base. In addition to her successful music career, Shakira has also been recognized for her philanthropic work in the country, particularly through her Pies Descalzos Foundation, which has built schools for underprivileged children in Mexico.
During her concert, Shakira also took the opportunity to address the current political and social situation in Mexico, calling for unity and love among its people. “We are all one, we are all brothers and sisters, and we must support each other and love each other,” she said.
The show ended with a spectacular performance of “Hips Don’t Lie”, where Shakira showed off her iconic belly dancing moves, and “Waka Waka (This Time for Africa)”, her official song for the 2010 FIFA World Cup.
Shakira’s Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran tour will continue in other cities in Mexico, including Guadalajara, Monterrey, and Puebla, before heading to the United States and Europe. With this tour, the Colombian artist continues to break records and solidify her position as one of the most successful and influential Latin artists of all time.
