Rauw Alejandro and Romeo Santos, friends for years, had been talking about collaborating together for a long time. Almost four years ago, it almost happened, but schedules, tours, and other releases got in the way. Now, their first collaboration, “Khé?”, has reached No. 1 on Billboard’s Latin Airplay chart, becoming the first No. 1 for either of them since 2023. The song, romantic and danceable at the same time, is the fourth from Rauw’s new album, Cosa Nostra, to enter the chart. But it is the first to reach the top, thanks in part to a smoother rhythm that allows it to flow between formats. Ironically, “Khé?” wasn’t even planned to be on this album. As Rauw told Billboard in an exclusive conversation, he originally wrote the song for his 2021 album, Vice Versa. “I was preparing a song for Romeo and I got together in the studio to work with [producer] Mr. Naisgai and Elena Rose, who is the composer of the chorus,” said Rauw during a break between rehearsals for his Cosa Nuestra arena tour, which kicks off on April 5 in Seattle. “We were looking for that flow for Romeo, so I could collaborate with him. And from there came the melody of, ‘What’s killing you, saying that now without me you’re having a better time.’ We tried to empathize with Romeo’s feeling. I was leaning towards bachata from day one because I am a bachatero. Then, when I showed it to Romeo, he loved it.” Romeo really loved the song, but he was busy with other projects. Still, Rauw had faith. He never released the song, saving it for a special moment. When he started recording Cosa Nuestra, he contacted Romeo again to exchange ideas. It was Romeo who finally said, “Rauw, do you remember that song we did? That’s the hit.” Due to scheduling conflicts, they worked via Zoom, with Romeo helping with production – as he likes to do – and they ended up incorporating an African kizomba rhythm into the tropical and reggaeton fusion of the song. “Romeo loves kizomba, and since I was spending a lot of time in jazz clubs and speakeasies in New York, we added a touch of New York jazz,” says Rauw. The two finally met in New York to film the video, a black and white piece full of nostalgia that pays tribute to old Broadway and shows both artists dancing on the stairs of an old movie theater and on the subway. “It’s one of my best visual works, and I can’t wait to sing it live,” says an excited Rauw. “I am one of those who believe that God’s timing is perfect. Artists have their schedules, and I have always understood that, from the beginning of my career. You have to respect other people’s time. Many things have to align for a collaboration to happen or be successful. But we always had a beautiful relationship. We talk on the phone, we text, we support each other’s music. We have a lot of respect for each other’s work. And I think that’s what makes this collaboration so special.” With “Khé?” reaching No. 1, Rauw and Romeo have proven that good things come to those who wait. And their friendship and mutual admiration have only made their collaboration even more successful.
