Jennifer Lopez will be the host of the 2025 American Music Awards, which will be broadcast live coast-to-coast on Memorial Day, Monday, May 26. She will also kick off the show with a musical performance. On Thursday, May 22, Lopez took a break from rehearsals to chat with Billboard about her role as host and her performance on the show. During the interview, she made a surprising revelation: “I don’t love being a host, to be honest.” However, there is no doubt that she will fully commit to this task, something that is characteristic of J.Lo.
We talked about her debut on the show in 1991 as a dancer behind New Kids on the Block, a slip-up during a performance in 2009 (although she immediately got up, demonstrating her professionalism), and her tribute performance to salsa legend Celia Cruz in 2013, which she considers one of her favorite performances. This year, the show will take place at Fontainebleau Las Vegas. It will be the second time that Lopez has hosted the AMAs, as she previously hosted the show 10 years ago. Other artists performing on the show this year include Janet Jackson (who will receive the ICON Award), Rod Stewart (who will receive a lifetime achievement award), Benson Boone, Blake Shelton, Gloria Estefan, Gwen Stefani, Lainey Wilson, and Reneé Rapp.
Here is our conversation with Jennifer Lopez, with slight edits:
The AMAs started airing when you were 4 and a half years old. Did you grow up watching the AMAs and the Grammys?
Absolutely.
Did those shows fuel your dreams?
Yes, definitely. You can’t help but watch those shows, being an artist or even not knowing yet that you’re an artist, and feel drawn to the performances and the incredible moments you see, and how people are celebrated for what they do. It was always amazing to see what moments would leave a mark in your mind when you saw them on TV. I think they make young artists believe that it’s something they can really achieve.
Do you remember specific artists who had that effect on you when you were a child?
I remember watching them with my mom. She was a big fan of Diana Ross, and I remember watching Diana Ross at the AMAs and the Grammys. I remember watching all the Motown artists. Tina Turner was also a big influence for me.
You are the fourth music star to host the AMAs twice, following Lionel Richie, Diana Ross, and Pitbull. I would say you are in good company.
Oh, wow. Yes, that’s good company. It’s an incredible group.
I saw all 10 of your performances on the AMAs, and I have to say, they were all amazing. Do you have a favorite?
Thank you. I think my favorite was probably the Celia Cruz tribute. It was such a special moment for me because I grew up listening to her music and admiring her as an artist. To be able to pay tribute to her on such a big stage was an incredible honor.
You have also received several AMAs throughout your career. How does it feel to be on the other side, hosting and presenting awards to other artists?
It’s a different experience, but it’s also very exciting. I love being able to celebrate and recognize other artists for their talent and hard work. It’s a privilege to be able to do that as a host.
What can we expect from your performance this year?
I can’t give away too much, but I can promise that it will be a high-energy, show-stopping performance. I always try to bring my best to the stage, and this year will be no different.
You have had such a successful career in music, film, and television. What advice do you have for young artists who are just starting out?
My advice would be to never give up on your dreams. It takes a lot of hard work and determination, but if you believe in yourself and keep pushing forward, you can achieve anything you set your mind to. Also, always stay true to yourself and your artistry. Don’t let anyone else dictate your path or your creativity.
Lastly, what are you most looking forward to as the host of the 2025 AMAs?
I am most looking forward to the energy and excitement of the show. The AMAs are always such a fun and dynamic event, and I can’t wait to be a part of it again. I am also excited to see all the amazing performances and to celebrate the incredible talent in the music industry. It’s going to be a great night.
