Ángela Aguilar truly shined on Saturday night (March 29) at the Billboard Women in Music 2025 gala in Inglewood, California, when she accepted the Breakthrough Award with an emotional speech that was met with a standing ovation at the YouTube Theater. After delivering a sublime rendition of the Mexican classic “Cielito lindo” accompanied by members of the Harmony Project – a community choir made up of individuals from diverse backgrounds, including immigrant children or children of immigrants – Aguilar spoke candidly about a year that almost “broke” her due to constant headlines and online scrutiny about her marriage to Mexican singer Christian Nodal, who was there to support her. “I have had to cry under the weight of judgment and speculation about a story that I haven’t even told,” the artist said. “And yet, here I am. I keep singing, I keep standing. Because music is who I am.” Amid a thunderous ovation from her colleagues in the venue, she advised young women to “sing their truth and when they are told to be quiet, sing even louder.” Struggling to hold back tears, she dedicated her award to immigrant women who cross the border to the United States “with nothing but hope in their hearts, only to find themselves living in uncertainty and fear. You deserve security, dignity, the right to dream.” Ángela Aguilar performs at the Billboard Women in Music 2025 event on March 29, 2025 at the YouTube Theater in Inglewood, California. The youngest of the Aguilar dynasty – her father is Mexican music icon Pepe Aguilar, her grandparents are legendary Mexican artists Antonio Aguilar and Flor Silvestre – Ángela Aguilar made her stage debut as a young child when she accompanied Pepe at one of his concerts. Five years later, at the age of 8, she released her first album, a joint album with her older brother, Leonardo Aguilar. Both later joined Pepe on consecutive tours of arenas when he launched Jaripeo Sin Fronteras in 2018, paying tribute to the jaripeo show style – in which they sing while riding horses – that her pioneering grandparents popularized. Along the way, Ángela managed to place three songs at No. 1 on Billboard’s Regional Mexican Airplay chart and four hits in the top 10 of Latin Airplay, including her first No. 1 on that chart, “Por el contrario,” with Leonardo and Becky G, last year. Hosted by Laverne Cox, the Billboard Women in Music event honored influential women in the music industry, including honorees like Beyoncé, Taylor Swift, and Billie Eilish. But it was Aguilar’s powerful performance and heartfelt speech that stole the show and left a lasting impact on the audience. As she continues to make her mark in the music world, Aguilar’s message of resilience and empowerment will surely inspire many young women to follow their dreams and speak their truth.
