Baylee Littrell proved that talent definitely doesn’t skip a generation. The 22-year-old didn’t shy away from his famous father on Sunday night (March 9) during his audition on the season 23 premiere of American Idol. “There’s something about you that seems familiar,” new judge and former Idol champion Carrie Underwood said to the handsome Georgia singer, who definitely has his father’s smile. Instead of downplaying the connection, the video introducing Baylee focused heavily on his “nepo baby” status, starting with a clip of the singer as a young child on stage with his father, Backstreet Boys legend Brian Littrell, announcing, “This is the new generation of Backstreet Boys.” “And you look like your dad!” Underwood exclaimed, while judge Luke Bryan added, “You’ll have to forgive me, I didn’t have posters of your dad on my wall.” In a collage of some of his father’s biggest moments, Baylee said he definitely inherited his voice. “I guess you could say music runs in our family,” he said, while doing a clumsy spin and admitting that, “as for dance moves, that’s the one thing that didn’t genetically pass down.” And if you think it would be intimidating to try your hand at music when your dad is one of the stars of one of the biggest boy bands of all time, Baylee agrees. “Following in my dad’s footsteps is scary,” he said. “Because his career to me is one of the most extraordinary in music history.” In one of the most touching moments, Baylee recalled that when he was 8 or 9 years old he had the chance to open for BSB at a big arena show and play his “two little songs.” To ramp up the emotion, Brian Littrell said he’s always told everyone that his son is “ten times more talented” than he is, something Baylee proved when he sang an “emotional” original song about wanting to give up titled “Waiting on Myself to Die.” When Baylee started strumming his acoustic guitar and singing the turbulent lyrics of the song — “I don’t know what to do anymore/ It feels like I’m fighting this war alone” — the judges leaned forward, giving him their full attention. “You’re really good,” Underwood said. “Really good. I loved the song,” she added about the risk of playing an original while telling Baylee she believes he could go “very, very far” in the competition. The proud dad was nearly in tears after the performance, boasting that he also thinks his son could go far in the family business. “We’re super proud. It’s evident that he’s grown up in the industry and he’s made for this,” Brian said. Bryan asked if father and son ever sing together, which prompted Brian to join Baylee on stage for the audition.
