Olga Tañón, Anitta, and Chiquis will be honored at the third annual Billboard Women in Latin Music event, Billboard and Telemundo announced on Wednesday (April 2). The program will be broadcast live exclusively on Telemundo on April 24 at 9 p.m. (Eastern time). Hosted by Ana Bárbara, the two-hour music special will pay tribute to the “women who are positively driving the future of Latin music,” according to a statement. It will also be available through the Telemundo app, Universo, and Peacock. Among the first group of honorees announced, Tañón, known as “The Woman of Fire,” will receive the Musical Career Award for her nearly four decades of unparalleled influence as a merengue singer. Throughout her career, which began in the mid-80s, the Puerto Rican legend has not only conquered hearts, but also shaped the tropical style, earning a special place in the history of Latin music. This week, she was included in Billboard’s list of the Top 10 Latin Pop Artists of All Time, at No. 9. Twenty of her albums have entered the Top Latin Albums chart, including two that reached No. 1: Llévame Contigo (1997) and Te Acordarás de Mí (1998). On Tropical Airplay, the merengue star holds the record for the female artist with the most top 10 entries (29 in total). “Her musical versatility, passion for her art, and ability to connect with audiences of all backgrounds have made her a lasting force in the industry,” the statement says. Anitta, the trilingual superstar from Brazil, will be honored with the Vanguard Award for her revolutionary contributions to Latin pop as one of the few Brazilian artists to successfully break into the Spanish-speaking market. Her big break came in 2017 with the collaboration with J Balvin “Downtown,” which reached No. 14 on Hot Latin Songs. Since then, through impactful collaborations and solo hits like “Envolver” – which reached No. 2 on the Billboard Global 2000 chart – she has established herself as an essential force for “breaking barriers, challenging norms, and inspiring future generations,” the statement says. Rounding out the list of honorees in this first announcement, Chiquis will be recognized with the Impact Award for her “extraordinary contributions to both the music industry and society in general.” A three-time Latin Grammy winner, the Mexican-American artist continues the valuable legacy of her renowned family’s banda music. Chiquis has 12 entries on Regional Mexican Airplay and two No. 1 albums on Regional Mexican Albums: Ahora (2015) and Entre Botellas (2018).
