Chubby Checker, whose global hit “The Twist” dominated in 1960, has been eligible for the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame since the first class was announced in 1986, but had never been nominated until this year. Despite being overlooked for decades, he managed to make it in on his first ballot. The same goes for first-time nominees Bad Company, Joe Cocker, and Outkast, as well as Cyndi Lauper and The White Stripes, who had been nominated once before, and Soundgarden, who had been nominated twice before. These seven artists were chosen for induction in the performer category. This year also sees six new members in other categories. Salt-N-Pepa and Warren Zevon will receive the Musical Influence Award; Philly Soul producer Thom Bell, English studio pianist and organist Nicky Hopkins, and studio bassist Carol Kaye (who was part of the legendary Wrecking Crew of LA studio musicians) will receive the Musical Excellence Award; and producer and record executive Lenny Waronker will receive the Ahmet Ertegun Award. Unfortunately, several of these individuals did not live to see their induction. Hopkins passed away in 1994 at the age of 50; Zevon in 2003 at the age of 56; Soundgarden’s Chris Cornell in 2017 at the age of 52; and Bell in 2022 at the age of 79. Checker had to wait even longer for his induction than Cher, who was finally inducted last year, 59 years after Sonny & Cher’s hit “I Got You Babe.” With Outkast and Salt-N-Pepa being inducted this year, this marks the sixth consecutive year that one or more rap acts have been included. With Lauper, Salt-N-Pepa, Meg White of The White Stripes, and Carol Kaye inducted this year, this is the fourth consecutive year that four or more female artists have been added to the hall. Bell won the first Grammy Award presented for Producer of the Year, Non-Classical, in 1975. Coincidentally, Waronker was among the other nominees in that category that same year. Waronker was also nominated for Record of the Year for producing Maria Muldaur’s sultry and sensual hit “Midnight at the Oasis.” Among the many hits Waronker produced are Gordon Lightfoot’s No. 1 hit “Sundown”; Rickie Lee Jones’ “Chuck E.’s in Love”; and Randy Newman’s “I Love L.A.,” which Dawes performed as the opening song at the 2022 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony.
